Every day will look slightly different, but we structure the time to maximize learning, sisterhood, and fun! The virtual Summer Immersion Program will take place Monday - Friday(except holidays), including class time and individual work. We offer office hours for students that need additional support or help on weekly projects. Students will attend Partner-sponsored events during class time, collaborate with classmates in sisterhood activities, participate in web-based coding and work on final projects.
In the 2-week virtual Summer Immersion Program, we are combining games, design, and code in an all new Game Design track! In the first week of the program, you will learn the elements of game design and the iterative design process by creating a variety of short games using p5.js, a JavaScript library designed for creative coding. You’ll create an interactive avatar, a choose-your-own-adventure game, and a collection style game. The first week ends in a playtest where you will choose one of the games you created to playtest with your classmates. At the end of the playtest you will reflect on the process and consider iterating on the feedback you receive.
During week two, we are going to challenge you to design your own game in only 4 days. This project will take the form of a game jam, where you and/or a group of friends will prototype a game using the skills you learned in Week #1. You will design your game around a specific prompt that we will reveal during Week #2 of the program. Along the way, we’ll cover the fundamentals of user experience design, rapid prototyping, and playtesting as well as introduce you to many different computer science careers. At the end of the two weeks we’ll showcase our games and celebrate our achievements. All daily activities, materials, and projects will be available to students before class each day.
Please note: Our Curriculum team has added script to all video content, and all of our Girls Who Code HQ content is also screen reader accessible.
The table below outlines an example of the schedule students will commit to during the Summer Immersion Program.
Please Note: Students will only spend 2-3 hours daily in live synchronous classes and fun activities, followed by independent project work time. Some days will be shorter schedules than others due to specific events. Click on the link for more information regarding the attendance policy.
